Using Colour and Contrast in Dementia-Friendly Design
Colour can help an important item stand out, but there is no single scheme that suits everyone. Consider the contrast between an object and its surroundings.
Start with a practical goal
Identify something difficult to notice, such as a seat or door. Compare samples in the actual room before repainting or replacing furnishings.
Test the result
Lighting, reflections and patterns can affect how a change works. Ask the person what they can see and observe whether the item becomes easier to use.
Avoid blanket promises
A bright colour cannot guarantee recognition or independence. Larger projects need a review of the whole building, its users and their preferences.
