Understanding Dementia Symptoms
Dementia can affect memory, communication, thinking and everyday tasks. Patterns vary, so a symptom list cannot provide a diagnosis.
Prepare for an appointment
Record examples, when they began and how they affect daily life. With the person’s agreement, someone who knows them well can help explain changes.
Consider other explanations
A GP may arrange tests and specialist assessment. Do not dismiss difficulties as ageing or assume every new symptom is caused by an existing dementia diagnosis.
Urgent changes
Call 999 if someone suddenly becomes confused, as advised by the NHS. This needs urgent assessment rather than a routine dementia appointment.
