Helping Someone with Dementia Find the Toilet
Finding the toilet can become difficult even in a familiar building. Ask what is getting in the way: recognising the door, remembering the route or reaching it in time.
Make the destination recognisable
Try clear wording and an image the person understands. Check the sign from their usual approach. Do not assume one colour, symbol or height suits everyone.
Check the journey
Look for obstacles, confusing doors and poor lighting. Test a small change and observe whether it helps. A sign is only one part of the solution.
Keep help discreet
Protect privacy and offer help calmly. Discuss new difficulties, pain or accidents with a GP or continence professional rather than treating them only as a signage problem.
