Planning a Dementia-Friendly Interior
An interior should make daily life easier to understand while still feeling like home. Familiar belongings and preferences are useful starting points.
Choose a practical goal
Decide whether the change should help with recognising a seat, finding belongings or following a route. Test materials in the actual room.
Change gradually
Avoid replacing everything at once. Keep familiar items that help the person recognise the space and ask whether a new arrangement makes sense.
Review with users
Observe the room at different times. Include residents and staff in care settings, alongside designers. Seek professional input for physical adaptations and equipment.
