Supporting Everyday Safety with Dementia
A safer home should also be a place where someone can enjoy their routine. Discuss concerns with the person and balance support with choice, privacy and access to help.
Prioritise actual situations
Record what happens during tasks that cause concern. A specific difficulty is a better starting point than changing the whole house because of a diagnosis.
Agree a response plan
Before buying an alert device, check who receives alerts, who can respond and what happens if power or connectivity fails. Consider consent and privacy with the care team.
Review support
An aid does not guarantee safety. Keep emergency contacts accessible and seek a care or equipment assessment when needs change.
