Choosing Eating and Drinking Aids for Dementia
Mealtimes should be comfortable and enjoyable. Recognising food, holding cutlery and swallowing are different issues, so observe the difficulty before choosing an aid.
Match the task
Compare handles, plate edges, cup weight and cleaning instructions. Colour contrast may help some people see a meal, but there is no guaranteed improvement or universally best colour.
Keep choice central
Offer food and drink the person enjoys. Consider whether an aid feels acceptable as well as practical.
Seek clinical advice
Ask about weight loss or swallowing difficulties. Straws, spouts and cups are not suitable for everyone with swallowing problems; follow the relevant clinician’s recommendations.
