Ten Practical Ways to Reduce Falls Risks
Falls can have several causes. Equipment alone cannot remove every risk. Ask a GP or falls service for advice if someone has fallen, feels unsteady or fears falling.
Ten things to review
- Clear cables and clutter from walking routes.
- Check loose rugs and damaged flooring.
- Improve lighting on routes used at night.
- Keep everyday items within comfortable reach.
- Check that footwear fits and is suitable.
- Arrange appropriate sight checks.
- Ask a clinician or pharmacist to review medicines; do not change them yourself.
- Discuss suitable strength and balance activity with a professional.
- Have walking and transfer aids assessed and fitted.
- Agree how the person can summon help after a fall.
Make changes together
Review the person’s normal day, including getting out of a chair and reaching the toilet. Keep a record of falls or near misses to discuss with their care team.
