Planning Clear Signage in a Care Home
Useful signage helps people recognise a destination and find their way there. Consider residents, visitors and staff rather than putting the same sign everywhere.
Begin with a route audit
Walk everyday routes and note where a decision is needed. Ask which destinations are difficult to find. Record each proposed sign’s purpose, position and intended reader.
Test before ordering
Use readable wording and contrast. Test images with their intended users and check visibility from standing and seated positions.
Keep safety requirements separate
Room-identification signs do not replace required fire or workplace safety signs. Have those requirements checked by the appropriate competent person. Do not obscure exits.
Review after fitting
Observe whether the signs help. Check glare, damage and changes in room use, and update the plan as residents’ needs change.
