Reviewing a Building for Dementia-Friendly Use
A dementia-friendly label is a starting point for questions, not proof that a building meets every person’s needs. Review how people actually use it.
Walk through a visit
Review arriving, finding reception, locating the toilet, sitting down and leaving. Involve people living with dementia and note where help is needed.
Look beyond decoration
Consider information, noise, staff communication and access to assistance. A refurbishment can look attractive while leaving a confusing route.
Make an action plan
Give each issue an owner and review date. Test modest changes before a major redesign. Keep statutory accessibility, fire and safety requirements within their own professional review.
