Planning a Safer Bathroom for Dementia Care
Washing can be more comfortable when the routine is understandable and the equipment suits the person. Review entering, washing and leaving the room.
Respect the routine
Ask what feels difficult, explain the next step and protect privacy. Pause if the process causes distress.
Assess equipment
Seats, boards, lifts and steps do not suit every person or bathroom. Check fitting and transfer needs with a professional. A towel rail is not a grab rail, and suction aids must not be assumed suitable for supporting body weight.
Review use
Follow instructions and check condition. Make sure everyone assisting understands the equipment and seek advice as needs change.
