Making a Garden Enjoyable with Dementia
A garden offers opportunities for familiar activities and time outdoors. Participation and enjoyment matter more than a perfect result.
Follow interests
Ask whether the person enjoys planting, watering, watching birds or sitting outside. Offer a manageable activity with suitable tools and help.
Check the setting
Review paths, seating and access. Plan rest breaks, shade and support for the weather and task. Store tools and gardening products appropriately.
Keep it flexible
A container or windowsill pot can offer an activity when a larger garden is difficult. Change the plan when the person is tired or uninterested.
