Supporting Comfortable Toileting with Dementia
Toilet difficulties deserve discreet support. Finding the room, managing clothing and using the toilet may each call for a different response.
Identify the difficult step
Sensitively note what happens and when. Offer help without rushing or drawing unnecessary attention to accidents.
Discuss equipment
A raised seat, support or commode must fit the user and space. Ask an occupational therapist about positioning and transfers rather than choosing by appearance.
Get appropriate help
Discuss new problems, discomfort or repeated accidents with a GP or continence professional. Products can support care but do not establish the cause of symptoms.
