Providing Compassionate Dementia Care
Care starts with the person’s preferences and how they feel today. A task may be manageable one day and difficult the next.
Give time to respond
Introduce yourself when needed, explain what you are offering and allow an answer. Offer a manageable choice rather than several instructions together.
Look beyond the task
If someone seems distressed, consider comfort and whether a break would help. Discuss persistent changes with the care team rather than describing the person as difficult.
Share what helps
Record reassuring approaches and share them appropriately with others involved in care. Ask for help or training when a task is becoming hard to manage.
