Understanding Different Types of Dementia
Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal dementia are among the conditions that cause dementia. Their symptoms can overlap.
Why the type matters
The diagnosis helps the clinical team discuss appropriate care and treatment. Memory changes are not the only possible difficulty: communication, planning, movement or behaviour may also be affected.
Avoid assumptions
Do not infer a type from age or a single symptom. Ask the specialist to explain the findings, uncertainties and next steps.
Plan around the person
Two people with the same diagnosis may need different support. Note the tasks that matter to the person and use that information in care conversations.
