Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in the UK. Dementia describes symptoms that affect everyday life; Alzheimer’s is one condition that can cause them.
Getting a diagnosis
Changes in memory, language or familiar tasks deserve a conversation with a GP. Assessment can look for other causes as well as dementia. Symptoms and the support needed vary between people.
Discussing support
A diagnosis can help someone discuss treatment and plan support. Ask their clinical team about the options relevant to them. Everyday aids may help with specific tasks, but they do not treat or cure Alzheimer’s disease.
A practical starting point
Write down the activities the person enjoys, what has become difficult and who they want involved. Bring that information to appointments and care conversations.
